Duluth Public Schools, Independent School District 709, provides public educational services to the city of Duluth. The district is focused on providing an innovative educational experience, integrating the latest technologies into the classroom. With healthy, green facilities, and a safe and encouraging environment, district 709 consistently produces high test scores as well as high graduation rates. The city is also home to several independent and both Catholic and non-Catholic private schools.
Duluth is also a center of higher education, with the College of St. Scholastica, University of Minnesota-Duluth, Lake Superior College, Duluth Business University within the city’s limits and the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College located nearby.
The Duluth Transit Authority provides public transportation services to the residents of Duluth. The DTA provides comprehensive routes throughout the city, including specialize routes for higher educational institutions.
Under the Mayor-Council form of government, Duluth is governed locally by a nine-member City Council. The council is made up of the Mayor, four at-large councilmembers, and five councilmembers elected by each of the five city districts.
Duluth was first utilized by fur traders in the 1650s, but began as a permanent settlement in the 1800s. Duluth is surrounded by natural resources, which made it a smart site for development. The canal was added in 1871 to ease the entrance of ships into the harbor, and because the canal separated a piece of land from the rest of the city, a ferry was used to shuttle people across. In 1904, a ferry bridge was constructed, which lead the way for the famous lift bridge, which was constructed in 1929.
The Aerial Lift Bridge is actually the largest, and quickest lift bridge in the world, rising to 138 feet in 55 seconds. When the St. Lawrence Seaway was opened, the bridge became even more important, as Duluth became the largest inland harbor in the world with ocean vessels traveling to the city frequently.
Though Duluth has seen the rise and fall of several industries, as well as a period when Canal Park was all but in ruins, the vibrant city is a beautiful and thriving place. Duluth is currently home to over 85,000 residents and continues to grow and change.
